An Indian Air Force (IAF) convoy was ambushed and fired upon by terrorists in Poonch on May 8. A local told chilling details of the attack, which took place before his very eyes.

Five Air Force personnel were grievously injured in the Surankote area of Poonch, including Corporal Vikky Pahade, who died in a hospital.

Asgar, a local in Poonch’s Jaran Wali Gali area, told ANI the gunfight between the security forces and terrorists lasted approximately 20 minutes.

During a fierce gunfight that lasted for about 20 minutes, we were frightened. Later, I found out that several of our soldiers had been injured and one of them had died. The gunfire caused my children to cry. The eyewitness told ANI that he could not identify how many terrorists were there because of the dense foliage.

Expressing concern for his children’s safety, Asgar stated that the recent outbreak of violence in the area has caused him to worry every morning. He also noted that since the attack, essential supplies have stopped being transported to their remote location, adding to their daily struggles. Being on night duty only adds to his fears for personal safety as search operations continue for the terrorists responsible for the Poonch attack. Asgar also expressed hope that those who resort to senseless acts of violence will come to their senses. He acknowledged that even though terrorists may be willing to die in their actions, innocent lives are lost in the process and emphasized that the officer killed in the attack was not just a soldier but also someone’s loved one.

The eyewitness to the Poonch ambush also praised the Air Force personnel, who regularly travel and move on this route, and gave toffees to children whenever a convoy passes through this area.

My children often receive toffees from the Air Force personnel as they pass through this area every day. Our hearts are broken that four soldiers have been injured and one has died. May the wrath of God fall on those who orchestrated this attack,” he said.

On Monday, Corporal Pahade’s last rites were performed in his hometown Chhindwara, Madhya Pradesh.

After being transported to Nagpur by a special aircraft from Udhampur, the mortal remains of the fallen soldier were transported to Chhindwara by a special army helicopter.

Thousands of locals gathered to bid the fallen braveheart a tearful farewell led by Chief Minister Mohan Yadav.
